REVISION & STRATTICE™

BREAST AUGMENTATION

Breast Augmentation Revision & Strattice™

The results of breast augmentation change over time. Breast implants may require replacement during your lifetime, so you should plan to have future visits with your plastic surgeon to discuss potential revision procedures. Your breasts can change due to aging, weight fluctuations, hormonal factors and other natural processes. If you become dissatisfied with your breast augmentation results, revision surgery in Atlanta with Dr. Alan Larsen may help to maintain or improve your desired appearance.

What is Revision Breast Augmentation?

Revision breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that removes or replaces breast implants placed during breast augmentation. The procedure may be indicated for medical reasons or it may be the patient’s personal choice.

For best results, different cosmetic procedures may be performed during or after breast implant removal. For example, breast implant removal is frequently followed by replacement with a different implant type (such as silicone gel) or breast lift surgery.

Deciding if Revision Surgery is Right for You

There are a variety of reasons to consider revision breast surgery. You may decide that breast implants no longer fit into your lifestyle or you may decide that a different implant size or type is appropriate.

Common reasons for breast augmentation revision include:

  • Change in size preferences
  • Switch from saline to silicone
  • Decision to remove implants
  • Correct a complication (such as capsular contracture)

There are also medical reasons for breast implant removal, which may include trauma, disease, or a surgical complication. Possible complications include capsular contracture, implant malposition, visible implant rippling, ruptured implant, and nipple malposition.

Implants for Breast Asymmetry Correction

Having one breast that is a different size or in a slightly different position than the other is a common problem among women. This asymmetry of the breasts may be caused by genetic factors or can result from weight loss/weight gain, pregnancy, or aging. In some cases, women who have undergone a breast augmentation in the past may face problems with breast asymmetry over time.

Dr. Larsen is experienced in improving the balance of asymmetrical breasts using a completely customized approach to each woman’s breast augmentation surgery. During your consultation, Dr. Larsen will determine the best method for correcting your breast asymmetry. This may be by enhancing the size of just one of the breasts, or by enhancing both of the breasts using two slightly different implant sizes.

Supporting Your Implants with an Internal Bra (Strattice™)

Dr. Larsen also offers women a supplemental option of utilizing a Strattice™ internal bra. With this procedure, Dr. Larsen carefully places the Strattice within the implant pocket to act as a sheet of collagen beneath your skin. Using the Strattice internal bra can help to prevent visible rippling of your breast implants by thickening the skin, which also results in a more natural look and feel.

Strattice also can help to improve skin elasticity and works to provide your breasts with a noticeable lift. This internal bra procedure minimizes any skin stretching associated with enhancing the size of your breasts and supports the implant to promote longer lasting breast augmentation results.

How a Breast Augmentation Revision is Performed

Removing breast implants is a relatively simple procedure. Dr. Larsen typically approaches the implant through the same surgical incisions as your original breast augmentation. Surgery may be as short as one hour, but this will vary depending on your particular condition. Revision to correct a complication can take longer and will often require more complex surgical techniques.

Breast Implant Revision Recovery

Recovery after breast implant exchange is about the same as the first breast augmentation, and in some cases, it is faster.

It’s important to know that breast implant removal has the potential for an undesirable aesthetic outcome, especially if you’ve had implants for several years. After the augmentation, the skin stretches to accommodate the implants. If they are removed, your skin may not shrink back to normal.

In some cases, the breasts do return to their pre-augmentation appearance, but most patients will benefit from another cosmetic procedure. Dr. Larsen may recommend a breast lift to tighten the tissues and excess skin. To meet your appearance goals, he may also recommend a different implant size or different type of breast implant.

Common Questions

What does breast augmentation revision cost?

As you might expect, the cost of a revision breast augmentation procedure varies quite a bit. The price of breast augmentation with Strattice ranges from $8,500 to $9,500. If you’re getting revision surgery, the cost depends on the reasons for the surgery, the extent of complications (if any), and whether you intend to replace your implants or simply remove them. If you’re replacing implants, the cost also varies depending on the type of implants you choose: saline or cohesive silicone gel. At the end of your consultation, we provide a detailed price quote that’s based on Dr. Larsen’s physical exam and your aesthetic goals.

How often do breast implants need to be replaced?

Many women can go 10 or 15 years, or even longer, without replacing their breast implants. Others experience issues after 5 years that prompt them to get revision augmentation. If you’re happy with the implants you have, there is no reason to replace them.

That said, implants are not designed to last forever. If you have silicone implants, it is important to maintain contact with your plastic surgeon and have regular MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) tests to ensure there are no cracks or ruptures.

How soon after an initial breast augmentation can I undergo revision surgery?

It’s important to remember that it may take months for you to see the full results of a breast augmentation procedure. Sometimes, a patient may be initially disappointed with the results, but end up quite happy. This is partly because the breasts need time to “settle” into their final position as they heal.

It’s best to wait at least a year before considering a revision procedure. If you’re experiencing complications that are more serious, such as an infection, you should contact your plastic surgeon immediately. But it’s best to be fully healed before undergoing additional surgery.
