Weight Loss Balloons
Non-surgical weight loss balloons were designed to help individuals struggling with obesity, learn to eat less and feel full safely, without having to undergo difficult and invasive gastric bypass surgery. Weight loss balloons take up space in the stomach to control and reduce caloric intake.
In partnership with Orbera® and Obalon®, we offer the world’s leading FDA approved gastric balloon weight loss technology. Weight loss balloon programs are growing in popularity because they are non-surgical, not permanent, and help patients build a lifestyle of diet and exercise that is sustainable.
Our comprehensive program is designed to help our patients lose a little or a lot of weight safely, under the supervision and guidance of our board certified bariatric weight loss team. Our main objective is to help our patients restore their health, while building strength, stamina and self confidence. We are here to assist our patients every step of the way along their path to excellent health and vitality.

Your Weight Loss Balloon Program
Step 1: Positioning the Balloon
The beginning of a year-long program to change your life starts with a non-surgical, outpatient procedure that only takes 20 minutes. First, we will begin the treatment with a diagnostic endoscopy to confirm the procedure is safe to perform. Next, we will insert the deflated gastric balloon through your esophagus and into your stomach. Then a syringe or other tool is used to fill the balloon with a sterile saline solution or a gas to about the size of a large orange.
Step 2: Shifting Your Habits
For the next six months, the gastric balloon is inside your stomach. During this time period, you will reduce the amount you eat and in the same process, re-train your brain and body to better recognize when your stomach is full. During this time period, please keep open and constant communication with our weight loss and nutrition support team. We are here to help you maximize the benefits of your weight loss balloon. With our team and the gastric balloon working in tandem, our patients typically lose 20 – 50 pounds (sometimes even more).
Step 3: Removing the Balloon
After 6 months, you will have altered the way you eat and improved your nutrition. At this point, we will remove the weight loss balloon. The non-surgical procedure is very similar to the placement of the balloon and typically only takes around 20 minutes.
Step 4: Continual Support and Coaching
Over the remaining six months of the program, you will work closely with our weight loss and nutrition support team to follow a personalized diet and exercise regimen. Our experts will create a program that is sustainable and creates a healthy lifestyle for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
It is essential to understand that the balloon is an instrument to aid weight loss and must be used in combination with diet, exercise, and a behavior modification program. The amount of weight you lose and maintain will depend on how closely you follow your diet and adopt long-term lifestyle changes. An Orbera® clinical study has shown that weight loss varies from person to person. On average, patients lost 3.1 times the weight of those that were on a diet and exercise program alone. In the US clinical study patients lost an average of 21.8 pounds.
Orbera® and Obalon® weight loss balloons have been reviewed in over 250 published global clinical papers. A balloon deflation or leak is a very rare event. However, if the balloon should unexpectedly collapse, you may no longer feel full after eating. If you suspect this may be the case, notify the Chastain Weight Loss Center team immediately. A simple abdominal x-ray can determine whether either has happened. If it has, the Dr. will arrange to remove the deflated balloon.
Based on published clinical studies of weight loss balloons providers (Orbera® and Obalon®), you should be able to maintain weight loss post-removal by staying on track with your prescribed diet and exercise regimen. Sticking to a healthy lifestyle will be key to maintaining your weight loss!
Gastric balloons have been used in the management of obesity for over 20 years. Over this time, they have progressed in shape, size, and design resulting in a contemporary, durable product, which is now well recognized as a safe weight loss procedure.
To qualify for any of our weight loss balloon programs, you must be an adult, have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 to 40, and be willing to participate in a medically administered program.
