A consultation is your time to ask questions, talk about your goals, hear about your options, and understand both the risks and benefits of this procedure. People commonly ask how much fat can be removed during surgery, and the answer varies based on Dr. Larsen’s assessment of your health and your personal aesthetic goals. Dr. Larsen will be able to guide you on which procedures will best suit your needs. Liposuction is typically an outpatient procedure and is performed by making a small incision and inserting a small tool that removes the fat from the desired area.

There are many types of Liposuction available because your body stores fat differently in different areas. We’ll provide you with a brief description of a few of the most common types but trust that Dr. Larsen will choose and explain the best technique for your specific needs. Keep in mind that he chooses techniques based on maximizing your results while minimizing your discomfort.

  • Tumescent Liposuction – This is probably the most common type of Liposuction. It is a simple procedure where the surgeon inserts a solution that aids in fat removal. Then the cannula (a small surgical tool) is inserted and suction is applied to remove the fat and fluids from your body. Typically, your body fluids are replenished with IV during this procedure. (It may sound a little strange if you’ve never considered how this procedure is done, but it’s actually a very simple process which produces fantastic results.)
  • Ultrasound-assisted Liposuction or UAL – This is often done in conjunction with traditional liposuction. During this procedure, the surgeon inserts a small metal rod that emits ultrasonic energy underneath your skin. This process ruptures the fat cell walls and allows for easier removal.
  • Laser-Assisted Liposuction or LAL – This is a procedure that uses a high-intensity laser to break down fat for removal. A small incision is made, and the laser is inserted to break down the fat, then the fat is then removed with a cannula.
  • Power-Assisted Liposuction or PAL – This type of Liposuction is performed using a cannula that moves back and forth creating a vibration. It’s the vibration that makes the procedure so effective allowing the surgeon to remove tough harder to remove fat both easier and faster. This method is known for causing less pain and swelling and can allow the surgeon to remove a greater volume of fat. This option is also commonly used if you have previously had liposuction.
