SMOOTH YOUR SHAPE

LIPOSUCTION

Atlanta Liposuction

Many people we see at our Atlanta practice consider liposuction because they’re in good shape but just can’t do anything about those extra bulges that resist diet and exercise. Whether you’re stuck with “love handles” or a little extra fat in your back or thighs, Dr. Larsen performs liposuction at Buckhead Plastic Surgery in Atlanta to sculpt and contour the proportional body shape you want.

Dr. Larsen’s experience and consistent results attract liposuction patients from Decatur and Marietta, in addition to other areas surrounding Atlanta. Request a consultation using the online form, or give our office a call at 404.367.9005 to schedule an appointment.

Your Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. It is safer and more effective than ever for patients who are within 25 to 30% of their ideal body weight, in good overall health, and who are physically active. A good liposuction candidate also has skin that retains most of its elasticity and who has maintained a stable weight for the previous 1 or 2 years.

Dr. Larsen targets treatment areas with liposuction, known clinically as suction-assisted lipectomy, using a thin, hollow tube called a cannula to remove the excess fat from beneath the skin. Liposuction cannulas typically vary in size from 2mm to up to 8mm in diameter. The smaller the cannula, the finer the area that can be treated.

The procedure begins with Dr. Larsen making very small, well-hidden incisions and then inserting the cannula that is attached to a machine that suctions excess fatty tissue from your body. As an experienced plastic surgeon specializing in liposuction, Dr. Larsen not only removes the fat but creates smooth, natural-looking contours in the treatment areas.

Recovery & Results

Liposuction causes minimal to moderate discomfort for most patients. This discomfort is usually well-controlled by pain medication prescribed by Dr. Larsen. Patients experience most of their discomfort when they are changing positions during the first 3 to 4 days. When the patient is sitting, lying down or standing and walking, there is usually a minimal amount of discomfort.

Getting up and sitting down, however, will take some time for you to get back to normal comfort levels. Swelling after surgery is common, including the face, hands and feet. This edema usually starts resolving within 3 to 5 days. Wearing a compression garment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the first 6 weeks after surgery is essential to ensure you get the best results possible. Patients usually return to work about 5 days after surgery; however, this depends on the amount and areas treated.

Although some people see immediate results following liposuction, most of the results start to appear more gradually as swelling and bruising subside over the first 3 to 6 weeks. Your shape will likely continue to improve over the next 6 months to a year. During this time, safeguard your results with a healthy, active lifestyle, along with diet and exercise. Limit sun exposure and alcohol consumption. Maintaining these essentials will help to keep your new shape for years to come.

“I have been a patient at BPS for going on 5 years and have always had wonderful experiences – have had breast augmentation, BOTOX, Juvéderm, facials, peels, lip tattooing and most recently liposuction and has always been a great experience A+.”*

Everything You Need to Know About Liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that breaks down and removes fat from parts of your body that are resistant to diet and exercise. It is commonly performed on areas like the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms, or neck. Contrary to popular belief it is not a weight loss surgery, rather it is an aesthetic procedure focused on small pockets of fat that have accumulated on your body.

When your body gains weight you accumulate fat cells, over time those cells increase in size and volume. Liposuction is used to reduce the number of those fat cells in targeted areas on your body. It’s used for slimming and reshaping your body, contouring it by removing excess fat deposits. If you have an area that you’d like to improve but diet and exercise aren’t cutting it; or maybe you’ve always been curious, we’re here to answer some questions for you.

Am I a good candidate?2019-09-16T14:18:24-04:00

The best candidates for successful liposuction are adults who are within 30% of their ideal weight and have maintained that weight for the last 1-2 years. It also helps if you have firm elastic skin and good muscle tone.  As with any surgery, you’re a better candidate for recovery if you are in good health and don’t smoke.

What should I expect?2019-09-16T16:10:16-04:00

All cosmetic procedures start the same way, and that is with a consultation. A consultation is your time to ask questions, talk about your goals, hear about your options, and understand both the risks and benefits of this procedure. People commonly ask how much fat can be removed during surgery, and the answer varies based on Dr. Larsen’s assessment of your health and your personal aesthetic goals. Dr. Larsen will be able to guide you on which procedures will best suit your needs. Liposuction is typically an outpatient procedure and is performed by making a small incision and inserting a small tool that removes the fat from the desired area.

There are many types of Liposuction available because your body stores fat differently in different areas. We’ll provide you with a brief description of a few of the most common types but trust that Dr. Larsen will choose and explain the best technique for your specific needs. Keep in mind that he chooses techniques based on maximizing your results while minimizing your discomfort.

  • Tumescent Liposuction – This is probably the most common type of Liposuction. It is a simple procedure where the surgeon inserts a solution that aids in fat removal. Then the cannula (a small surgical tool) is inserted and suction is applied to remove the fat and fluids from your body. Typically, your body fluids are replenished with IV during this procedure. (It may sound a little strange if you’ve never considered how this procedure is done, but it’s actually a very simple process which produces fantastic results.)
  • Ultrasound-assisted Liposuction or UAL – This is often done in conjunction with traditional liposuction. During this procedure, the surgeon inserts a small metal rod that emits ultrasonic energy underneath your skin. This process ruptures the fat cell walls and allows for easier removal.
  • Laser-Assisted Liposuction or LAL – This is a procedure that uses a high-intensity laser to break down fat for removal. A small incision is made, and the laser is inserted to break down the fat, then the fat is then removed with a cannula.
  • Power-Assisted Liposuction or PAL – This type of Liposuction is performed using a cannula that moves back and forth creating a vibration. It’s the vibration that makes the procedure so effective allowing the surgeon to remove tough harder to remove fat both easier and faster. This method is known for causing less pain and swelling and can allow the surgeon to remove a greater volume of fat. This option is also commonly used if you have previously had liposuction.

When you call our office Dr. Larsen will meet with you, assess the areas you’d like to improve and explain to you your options. He will help you understand which procedure is best for the exact results you’d like to achieve. Liposuction is one of the most common procedures requested because of its quick recovery time and dramatic results. Call today to book your consultation and you might be surprised at how easy it is to change some of those stubborn areas.

How long is recovery?2019-09-16T16:10:53-04:00

Well, of course, it depends on the areas of your body that were treated and the amount of fat that was removed. However, this is typically an outpatient procedure and most of our patients return to work and normal responsibilities within a few days. Although we might recommend you wait to return to your regular workout routine for another 2-4 weeks. (Sorry no kickboxing immediately after this surgery.)

It’s also important to keep in mind as with most cosmetic procedures, it’s normal to experience things like swelling and bruising. Like any surgery, Dr. Larsen will send you home with post-op care instructions. Your instructions will vary based on your specific procedure but may include things like instructions to wear compression garments to reduce swelling. As always following doctor’s orders will lead to the fastest and most comfortable recovery.

One thing to note about this particular procedure is that as your body is healing, so it’s normal to experience some contour irregularities. This is a normal part of the healing process so no need to panic. Simply rest and relax and as your body heals the swelling will subside and your new slimmer curves will appear.

Are the Results Permanent?2019-09-16T14:22:48-04:00

The fat cells that are removed during the procedure are removed permanently. (…Obviously.) But this doesn’t prevent your body from gaining weight in the future. However, if you do gain a few pounds in the future your body tends to carry that weight in other areas, not the areas treated. That being said for the best results, you can protect your investment by caring for yourself well by consuming a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy lifestyle after your procedure.
