Essentially, stem cells work to replace defective or damaged cells. What makes them extraordinary is when injected into the body, stem cells can reach the location of the injured cells because the damaged tissue sends inflammatory signals that act as a roadmap. Since stem cells work to permanently regenerate damaged tissue and enhance repair mechanisms, when used in conjunction with a procedure like microneedling, microneedling with stem cells can yield more dramatic and long-lasting results . Also, since stem cells can protect against oxidative stress, the procedure can boost the body’s ability to ease future cell damage associated with the aging process, essentially turning back the clock on skin aging during the healing process.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is an innovative and popular skin rejuvenation treatment that improves skin’s appearance with minimal downtime. It can ease the look of fine lines and wrinkles, reduce large pores, improve texture and tone, as well as minimize scars, acne, sun spots, and hyperpigmentation.
The microneedling process works by safely creating minor skin injuries with microscopic pinpricks through the skin’s surface. These tiny, painless injuries trigger the formation of new tissue and release the skin’s natural growth factors that heal and repair damage. This is where collagen and elastin fibers work their magic to thicken the skin, giving it a more even tone and texture with improved elasticity.
Similar to microneedling with PRP (also referred to as the Vampire Facial, when they use PRP), microneedling can be enhanced by the application of stem cells, the body’s raw materials from which all cells are created. Stem cells are renowned for being self-renewing with remarkable healing properties.

How does Microneedling with Stem Cells work?
At LUX, we use an FDA-approved, hand-held pen device that delivers tiny microneedle punctures at a safe and effective depth. Longer needles are used on parts of the body, while shorter needles are used on the face. The precise delivery system is quick and painless, with amazing results.
Prior to the microneedling, a topical anesthetic is applied to make the procedure comfortable. Stem cells are applied to the skin then microneedling will begin so the stem cells can be penetrated down to the dermis. Then your LUX practitioner will roll the Skin Pen device across the targeted areas, delivering minute pinpricks to the skin. The injuries are so tiny they are hardly visible to the naked eye and do not damage the skin.
After microneedling is completed the practitioner will inject stem cells into your problem areas where the Skin Pen cannot be used. Immediately following the procedure, the skin will be inflamed, similar to a sunburn, but beneath the surface, stem cells are actively working to renew, repair, and multiply. As your body’s natural growth factors are stimulated, the skin’s firmness, tone, and texture improve. New collagen in the upper dermis can take up to a year to mature, which is another reason why microneedling with stem cells can provide lasting results.
Frequently Asked Questions About Microneedling With Stem Cells
Microneedling with stem cells is most commonly done on the neck and face. It is often used to target the following cosmetic concerns:

Treatment plans vary based on each patient and the target area being treated. This is something that will be discussed during your LUX consultation. For rejuvenation and lasting results, patients often get one or two treatments a year after the initial treatment sessions to maintain optimal results.
After a microneedling with stem cells treatment, your skin may feel tight, dry, or sensitive to the touch. It may also look swollen and feel sunburned. The redness, sensitivity, and sunburn-like feeling generally subsides within 24 hours of treatment. The other side effects tend to disappear in 2-7 days. During your microneedling with stem cells procedure, your LUX practitioner will review other recovery items to consider like wearing sunscreen and avoiding extreme sun exposure for a few days following your treatment.
While most patients can do microneedling with stem cells, there are a few exceptions. Microneedling is not suited for pregnant patients or people who have recently undergone radiation treatments. There are certain skin diseases like psoriasis and eczema that would also exclude you from being a good candidate for microneedling with stem cells.
