Understanding Facelift and Neck Lift Surgery
A facelift is designed to address common issues such as sagging skin, jowls, and poor jaw definition. A neck lift is often paired with a facelift to address vertical neck bands, wrinkles and deep folds, or a turkey neck – the sagging skin along the front of the neck or below the chin.
Not all patients, however, require both the facelift and neck lift. During your consultation, Dr. Larsen carefully assesses the condition of your skin and facial structure to determine a surgical plan best suited for your unique situation. Even though some patients can achieve their cosmetic goals with either a facelift or a neck lift, having both procedures performed often yields the best results. As a double board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Larsen is highly experienced in performing both of these facial surgeries while maintaining the natural look all patients want from their rejuvenation.
Dr. Larsen begins a facelift by making carefully placed incisions, typically just inside the hairline at the temple and extending down along the natural curve of the ear, behind the ear, and into the hairline. Dr. Larsen considers your natural hairline while designing these incisions. For patients who don’t need a full facelift, Dr. Larsen often uses a limited incision.
These procedures require Dr. Larsen to analyze patients’ facial proportions and aging so that further planning and small corrections can be performed more effortlessly throughout the years, maintaining the overall results desired. Meticulous detail and a vision of the future create this foundation to beautifully sculpt your face.
The final component of the facelift and neck lift surgery addresses the neck. Through the facelift incision and a small incision beneath the chin, excess skin, vertical bands, and a turkey wattle can be improved and contoured. Dr. Larsen also removes and sculpts excess fatty tissue.
Once Dr. Larsen repositions and redefines the underlying structure and support, he drapes the skin over the new foundation, carefully removes excessive skin, and then closes the incisions. He typically closes the incisions with staples in the hairline and small sutures in the exposed skin areas.
Care is taken not to remove too much skin, which would result in an unnatural look. Skin that has been pulled too tight will not give you results that last longer.
The best candidates for facelift and neck lift procedures are between 40 and their late 60s. Some men and women, however, choose to undergo a minor facelift when they’re younger to strengthen their facial structure and help prevent significant sagging of the skin.
After Your Facelift and Neck Lift
You will be likely sleepy immediately after the surgery. This may be followed by a little anxiousness as you become fully awake and find specialized ice packs along your face and eyes. Our nursing staff reassures patients about the dressings to help calm their nerves.
The most difficult time for most patients is the first night after surgery. This is why we require that you stay with us overnight. We will see to your comfort, and you’ll have round-the-clock care, which provides you and your loved ones with peace of mind. After the first night, expect to be a little sore, but not in any extreme or unbearable pain. Any discomfort can usually be managed with pain medication.
Over the next week or so, the bruising or skin discoloration resolves, swelling reduces, and you will start to notice your new facial features. While experiences vary, expect your face to appear rejuvenated and start looking years younger than before your surgery. You should expect your skin to feel a bit tight, but it will soon feel back to normal as the healing process continues. After about a month you should feel well and comfortable enough to resume most social activities. A full return to activity is expected by 6 weeks. In about 3 months, your results will likely reveal a refreshed and natural-looking appearance.

The Top Questions About Neck Lift Surgery
Neck lift surgery is a common procedure in the world of plastic surgery, and Dr. Larsen has performed countless neck lifts yielding beautiful results for his patients. As with any procedure, patients typically have a lot of questions, so we compiled the most asked questions for you about neck lift surgery.
A neck lift is a common cosmetic procedure and is often paired with a facelift. However, a neck lift is a fantastic stand-alone procedure. Many people are unhappy with the contours of their neck, especially adults showing signs of aging, sagging, previous dramatic weight loss, etc. The neck is a highly visible area of your body and often ages prematurely. With age, the muscles in the neck naturally weaken, and a common result of this is visible vertical bands on the neck. Along with the bands, it’s also common for fat to accumulate under the chin as we age. This causes the skin to stretch and as gravity takes a toll it begins to sag.
A neck lift is a surgery that restores the youthful contours of the neck. Surgically the neck lift removes the excess skin and fat deposits to enhance a more youthful appearance and profile. The best candidates for a neck lift are non-smokers who are in good health and are within their ideal weight. Good candidates have loose or sagging skin along with the neck or under the chin, visible vertical bands on the neck, or accumulated fat under the chin that they would like removed. If the neck area of your body is making you feel self-conscience maybe a neck lift is for you. Patients who receive a neck lift from Dr. Larsen are extremely pleased with the results and the greatest regret we hear from our patients concerning this procedure is that they didn’t call sooner.
All cosmetic procedures are customized to the patient. Depending on your body, and the amount of work needed the average range for a neck lift in Atlanta can range from $5,000-9,000. At Buckhead Plastic Surgery this procedure is often combined with a facelift, brow lift, upper and/or lower blepharoplasty, and sometimes chin implant; in which case the cost would be significantly upwards of $9,000 but would give the patient a maximum result. The best way to find out the cost of your procedure is to schedule a consultation. Let Dr. Larsen examine the areas you’d like to improve and he will present you with the best options for your desired results.
Neck lift surgeries are performed under general anesthesia and usually takes about 2 hours to complete. Typically a neck lift involves a series of small incisions starting about halfway up the ear and running down around the earlobes and into the hairline; Another small incision is placed under the chin. Using these two incisions, the skin can be elevated, the fat removed, the underlying muscles tightened, and the excess skin trimmed and tightened. Dr. Larsen is very intentional about the placement of the incisions. His goal is always to provide you with the maximum result and minimal visible scarring.
After the incisions are made fat is removed or sculpted for a more flattering contour. Often the platysma muscle is tightened and the tissue on your neck is repositioned. Your skin is draped over the new contours of your neck and any excess skin is removed before closing the incisions.
You will likely wake up after your surgery with a weightless, foam bandage in place to keep swelling to a minimum. The most discomfort is felt immediately following surgery. You have the option to return home or enjoy full-service care at Chastain Surgery Center. Let us pamper you and closely monitor all your medical needs while you rest. We have found that giving our patients extra care and attention allows them to better relax and focus on resting while their body begins the healing process. By the time you leave, you’ll be much more comfortable and able to care for yourself easier in the comfort of your own home.
Our highly experienced staff will ensure that you understand the proper follow up steps to expedite the healing process at home. Swelling and bruising are to be expected. If you experience any pain following the surgery it usually resolves to a mild discomfort over the first 24-48 hours. Most patients report feeling tightness or a pulling sensation across the neck. This is common and to be expected as your body heals from your neck lift.
Dr. Larsen will send you home with specific instructions for caring for your incisions and directions for temporary lifestyle adjustments to aid in healing. For example, you will be instructed to sleep on your back at an incline for the first 7-14 days.
Although it can take months for complete healing and the optimal results to be visible and for your neck to feel natural again, most people are able to return to work within 5-7 days. Most discoloration and swelling has reduced by that point, and you will have a better idea of what the new contours of your neck will look like.
Let’s be clear, cosmetic procedures do not stop the aging process. However, the effects of a neck lift can permanently remove fat deposits and excess skin under the chin and around the neck. Carefully following your doctor’s instructions and living a healthy lifestyle is the best way to ensure lasting results from your neck lift. Eating a balanced diet, not smoking, exercising regularly as well as taking excellent care of your skin will all help to slow the signs of aging. As well, regular skin maintenance through the use of sunscreen, medical-grade products (which can be purchased at LUX Med Spa), regular skincare treatments, will all prolong the effects of your results.
