What Is Botox?

Botox is the OG cosmetic injectable. It’s been around the longest, and it’s the most well-known and highly used cosmetic injectable. Botox is a naturally occurring substance injected into the face and neck to be a neuromodulator. Meaning it works by preventing nerve signals from reaching the muscle and effectively keeps it from moving. This lack of movement prevents the formation and deepening of wrinkles. Botox is FDA approved to treat glabellar lines, horizontal forehead lines, and crow feet around the eyes. In addition, therapeutic Botox treats chronic migraines, overactive bladder, and hyperhidrosis.

What Is Dysport?

Dysport is also a neuromodulator with the same primary active ingredient as Botox but has added proteins in the formulation, making its formula more diluted and less heavy. Because of this formulation, Dysport may be better for treating larger areas of concern such as the forehead. In addition, some people feel that they experience a more natural aesthetic with Dysport and a less “frozen” look. If you’re not sure which one is right for you, the best thing to do is book a consultation. Our trained staff will help design a treatment plan for you.

How are they alike?

Because Botox and Dysport both originate from botulinum toxin, they are pretty similar. They are both FDA-approved and safe and effective. They are considered noninvasive, and they both work by relaxing facial muscles temporarily.

How are they different?

The primary difference between Dysport and Botox is the areas in which they are approved for use. For example, Dysport is used for correcting glabellar lines and frown lines. On the other hand, Botox can be used to treat a wider variety of wrinkles, including crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, and laugh lines.

One of the main differences between Dysport and Botox is the areas in which they are approved for use. Dysport is primarily used for correcting glabellar lines, the frown lines between your eyebrows. Dysport is an excellent option for moderate to severe frown lines.

Some patients have reported quicker results with Dysport and see results within a few days; Botox patients typically report seeing full results around two weeks. However, a single unit of Botox is about three times more potent than Dysport. This isn’t a reflection on how well it works, but rather more Dysport is needed to achieve the same effect. As a worthwhile trade-off, Dysport is a bit more versatile in how it can be used and costs less per unit than Botox.

Which one is more effective?

They are both extremely effective; however, they are used slightly differently, so comparing them requires a closer look. Botox and Dysport have an excellent success rate for reducing the signs of wrinkles. Dysport lasts between 3 to 4 months and requires additional treatments to maintain results. Botox can last from 4-6 months, depending on the location of the injectable. Smaller areas around the eyes and lips tend to last much longer. Over time all neuromodulators break down and are absorbed by the body. You’ll begin to see movement in your muscles again, and that’s when you know it’s time to schedule your next visit!

How do they compare at a price?

Price is a common question we get when patients are interested in injectables. Botox and Dysport are both priced per unit. If you want injectables to be part of your beauty maintenance routine, you should consider getting a spa membership. Our LUX Spa members benefit from the best prices on facial injectables. When comparing prices on these two products, some would argue that Botox is the pricier option; however, it typically takes double the amount of Dysport to achieve the same results. So they are very comparable in price overall.

Which one is right for me?

Many patients find themselves trying to decide if Botox or Dysport is right. They are both excellent products. They are both FDA-approved, and they are both safe and effective. When you visit us at LUX, your practitioner will help you decide which treatment is best for you and many of our patients; it’s not an either-or scenario, but a combination of both that helps them accomplish their aesthetic goals. The Dysport is more diluted and spreads quickly than Botox, making it ideal for treating larger surface areas such as the forehead. However, Botox is more potent, making it most effective for small spaces like around the eyes.

Benefits of Choosing a Diamond Provider

Diamond status from Allergan, the maker of BOTOX, UVÉDERM, and KYBELLAOur practice has achieved Diamond status from Allergan, the maker of BOTOXJUVÉDERM, and KYBELLA products. Only about 3% of providers in the U.S. achieve this status, which is based on the volume of Allergan products used. This means our injectors have an extremely high level of experience using these products, and that we have earned a reputation as a trusted provider. Additionally, here at Buckhead Plastic Surgery, our status earns us special pricing on Allergan products, which translates to savings for you.
